Just The Most Beautiful Deck Of Cards We’ve Ever Seen

It all began as a “purely creative exercise.” “My freelance work had dried up, and I needed to keep myself busy. I wasn’t trying to capture the interest of a certain market. I simply wanted to try my hand at branding something that had a lot of components, that had a deep heritage and that I felt had practical use.”

That’s Tyler Deep. Not so long ago, he put a $15 deck of cards up on Kickstarter, hoping to accrue the $6,000 to send them into production. What happened instead was one of those dreams Kickstarter is made of–4,000 backers showed up out of nowhere, pledging $146,000 to support the project. “I never thought people would care this much. . .not in a 100 years,” he says today. “I am floating in a sea of amazement.”

It wasn’t just any old deck of cards, of course. With a creative-sabbatical approach, Deep crafted his deck from top to bottom, designing every aspect, from the illustrations of royalty to his own font-like riff on the traditional hearts, spades, clubs, and diamonds. The effect is borderline antique without feeling retro, like a one-off deck built for a high-stakes poker game in some Hollywood period piece.

Now in their second printing, this edition of cards will feature metallic gold backs, and they’ll reside in a bold red box that’s printed with gold foil highlights. Red and gold–it’s an incestuous duo of royal opulence that will make your imported clay poker chips look cheap. And should you prefer to look more Wayne than Lannister, the deck will also be available in black.

Google Maps Brings Traffic Back

Last summer, Google Maps nixed the estimated arrival time when searching for directions. The reason for the removal was due to the fallibility of historic traffic data, which would occasionally result in erroneous estimates and generally lacked the level of accuracy Google was after. That all changes this week with the addition of both live traffic and the incorporation of more refined historical data, along with the inclusion of traffic on surface streets – not just freeways – into Maps.

The new and improved traffic data and drive time estimates are only available in select cities for the time being (New York, San Francisco and London, among others), and users can get tabs on local congestion by selecting the Traffic option in the upper right-hand menu and then selecting either “Live traffic” or “Traffic at day and time” in the bottom left-hand corner.

Drive times are now displayed in line with the turn-by-turn directions, allowing you to choose between taking your car, public transportation or walking, depending on the conditions.

Google is pulling traffic data from the traditional sources (everything from cameras to news helicopters), but the really real-time data is coming from Android users who’ve switched on the My Location feature in the Google Maps app. Mildly creepy, but it’s for a good cause…

Yes, Jaguar’s Hybrid Is Gorgeous

We make no bones about loving the Jaguar C-X16 hybrid sports car. It’s gorgeously styled, technologically advanced and promises to be a hoot to drive.

Jaguar unveiled the car at the Frankfurt auto show, and now we’ve got some video of company execs discussing the “design concept,” which almost certainly will see production at some point.

The C-X16 is not a hybrid in the traditional sense. Jaguar cribbed from Formula 1 and fitted the two-seater with a kinetic energy recovery system. The supercharged 3.0-liter V6 — 375 horsepower, 332 foot-pounds — provides most of the thrust, but a 70 kilowatt (94 hp) electric motor provides added boost at the push of a button.

Mash the gas and the red button on the steering wheel and you’ll hit hit 62 mph in 4.4 seconds. Top speed is 186 mph, and the car emits 165 grams of CO2 per kilometer. That comes to 33 mpg by our math, but let us know if we’ve screwed up the conversion.

All that and it’s drop-dead gorgeous? Sign us up.

Yap.TV Brings Real-Time Chat to iOS TV Guide

Yap.tv, a social TV guide app for iOS was updated to version 3.0 on Wednesday, adding enhanced navigation, instant live chat and access to better social discovery tools.

What sets yap.TV apart from other mobile TV guide apps? It is designed to connect users with their friends and social circles. Not only can users share what they’re watching with friends and family, they can also chat with friends or with fellow show-fans within the app itself.

The new yap.TV 3.0 app has been redesigned for a better visual experience. The iPad version now can be browsed using a 100% picture-based guide or the traditional channel grid.

The app is now easier to navigate by category, time of day or day of week. The iPad version also includes a special movie-browsing mode. Yap.TV has also updated its programming infrastructure to support providers across the nation.

What I like about yap.TV as a TV guide is that you can easily arrange channel lineups and customize what types of channels you want to see.

Of course, the real distinguishing feature of yap.TV are its social features. Similar to BeeTV, the app lets users see what people are saying about a show on Twitter. Users can also follow stars and celebrities associated with a show within the app and send out tweets and retweets. In addition, viewers can browse through yap.TV polls, as well as create new polls for other yap.TV users to vote on.

For us, though, live chat has the most potential within the app. Each show has its own live chat room. You can chat with the yap.TV users watching that show (assuming others are online and in the app) or you can invite your friends to join a private party chat.

Of course, for live chat to work, the userbase needs to be of a sufficient size. Still, it’s a smart idea. We think a real-time live-chat element within the TV guide itself adds value to the application.

What is your favorite TV guide and listing app for the iPhone or iPad? Let us know in the comments.
