Facebook & Spotify To Launch Streaming Music Service

We could soon be listening to Spotify within Facebook, according to reports from sources close to the deal.

Forbes is reporting that the integrated service is going through testing, but when it drops (in as little as two weeks), Facebook users will see Spotify’s icon appear on the left-hand side of their newsfeed. Once you click on the image, the service will be installed on your desktop, allowing you to listen to Spotify’s catalog via Facebook. Users will also be able to listen to music with friends via Facebook.

One downside, though, should this service come to pass: It will only be available in countries with access to Spotify — tough luck, U.S.

Forbes also reports that a Spotify spokesperson claimed not to know about the new music deal with Facebook. “We have a Facebook integration. We’re continuously working with them to make that as good as it can be. But that’s the extent of our relationship,” the spokesperson said.

Spotify tells us that it continues to work with Facebook on its integration, but didn’t confirm the rumor of a partnership.

“We have a good relationship with Facebook in that we have done an integration on Facebook Platform that has been valuable in terms of driving engagement with the Spotify service,” a Spotify spokesperson tells Mashable, referring to the music streaming service’s use of Facebook Connect. “We’re continuously working together to make the social experience on Spotify the best it can be and welcome relationships with any company looking to innovate by building more social value into the user experience.”

Facebook also tells Mashable there’s nothing new to announce.

“Many of the most popular music services around the world are integrated with Facebook and we’re constantly talking to our partners about ways to improve these integrations. Specific to Spotify, we consistently point to their product as one of the best examples of using Facebook to provide people with a rich social experience,” a spokesperson tells us.

At the eGI forum in Paris on Wednesday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also implied that there’s no such deal.

So we have to take this news with a grain of salt. Remember that rumor that Google was partnering with Spotify? That ended up being false.

What do you think is in store for Spotify? Weigh in in the comment below.

City Cycle Is A Pedal-Powered Party For 14

If you want to pedal away the pounds while pounding back pints, consider a night on the town riding the City Cycle party bike.

Similar to designs already cruising the streets of Europe, City Cycle is an all-American reinterpretation of the group bicycle optimized for tour groups. This one is owned by Rhett Reynolds and debuts this summer in the bike-friendly cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.

“The concept for these vehicles originated in Amsterdam, which is where most of the vehicles similar to the City Cycle that operate in the U.S. are still manufactured,” Reynolds said. “I hired Caztek Engineering to design and build a better version of the vehicles that already exist, and what they came up with can be considered the most advanced vehicle of this type anywhere in the world.”

The giant bike is 19 feet long and more than six feet wide. It features coolers in the floor, a six-speaker sound system, LED lighting and — most importantly — a bar rail, keg storage and cup holders. Tours are of course led by City Cycle employees barred from imbibing.

Reynolds says at least 10 people must be pedaling for the vehicle to move. Top speed is a leisurely 7 mph.

“All passengers are encouraged to pedal, but the vehicle will still go even if not all the passengers are giving 100 percent,” he said.

Getting the City Cycle cycling in some cities has been a problem in some jurisdictions. St. Petersburg, Florida, has been a hassle, even after eight months of wrangling, Reynolds said. But he isn’t giving up.

“City Cycle Tours plans to open for business in Florida as soon as the city ordinances are in place to allow the vehicle on the streets,” he said.

Sell Benefits

Kitchen Table Companies

One of the best classes I ever attended was when I worked at Pulvermedia and Jason Chudnofsky taught his famous class on understanding selling and marketing. The core message: sell benefits, not features. Yes, there are many people who’ve given similar advice, but I was there watching Jason, a very successful businessman, and he was making eye contact with us and sharing his personal experiences with this. You can credit who else you like in the comments, but to me, this was Jason’s message.

Sell Benefits

In rebuilding the front page of Kitchen Table Companies, we heeded the advice of Derek Halpern, who sat in on an interview similar to the ones we give our members inside of Kitchen Table Companies. We also listened to people like Arthur Germain, Margie Clayman, Susan Giurleo, and more.

Taglines and Headlines

KTC Tagline

We wanted to put the biggest possible benefit up front: “your small business advisory board.” Small business professionals often feel a bit isolated and out of ideas. They often have something they’d like to run by other professionals to get an opinion. So we wanted that concept up front.

We reinforced that message with these four points:

advice on how to grow your business

Remove Barriers

The other thing to think about when selling is to remove barriers to purchasing. The team came up with this:

Starters can get some basics for free

By starting with a $0 price point (for the very basic area of the forums), people can get into the system, get our weekly tips emails, hear what upcoming interviews and instructional tutorials are up and coming, etc. So instead of forcing a buy right off the bat, we remove a barrier by saying that people can come in and peek around.

SEO In Mind

We wanted a very colorful design that fits our “old timey vintage” aesthetic. Josh Fisher, our creative director, gave us some great graphics, but as you well know, Google can’t see graphics, so we made all kinds of plain text that explains the offer, plus makes search a possible lead generator for our product.

At the End Of It, Value and Benefits

It doesn’t matter what we tell you we’re selling. It matters if it’s working for you. We’ve started collecting Success Stories, plus featuring specific Kitchen Table Companies on our weekly show, Kitchen Table Talks on The Pulse Network. That way, people can get a hint of what we’re delivering inside, and they can hear from our successful members who feel like they are getting a value for what they’ve paid for.

We’re Learning

We ask our members what they need and want every day. It’s a fairly steady thrumming from Joe Sorge’s weekly emails, from forum topics, from our very DNA. We want to help, and we ask what we can do to participate.

My next worry is the onboarding. Once we’ve convinced someone to buy, is it really easy to know how newcomers should interact. But I’m going to observe how well we did or didn’t do with this new front end launch. I’m going to see whether our advice and the lessons of Jason Chudnofsky will give us more opportunity to serve others at Kitchen Table Companies.

How about you? How does your site sell benefits?

A marketing lesson from the apocalypse

If you’re reading this blog, then the world didn’t end, at least in my time zone.

How does one market the end of the world? After all, you don’t have a big ad budget. Your ‘product’ is something that has been marketed again and again through the ages and it has never worked. There’s significant peer pressure not to buy it…

And yet, every time, people succumb. They sell their belongings, stop paying into their kid’s college fund and create tension and despair.

Here’s the simple lesson:

Sell a story that some people want to believe. In fact, sell a story they already believe.

The story has to be integrated into your product. The iPad, for example, wasn’t something that people were clamoring for… but the story of it, the magic tablet, the universal book, the ticket to the fashion-geek tribe–there was a line out the door for that. The same way that every year, we see a new music sensation, a new fashion superstar. That’s not an accident. That story is just waiting for someone to wear it.

And the some part is vital. Not everyone wants to believe in the end of the world, but some people (fortunately, just a few) really do. To reach them, you don’t need much of a hard sell at all.

Too often marketers take a product and try to invent a campaign. Much more effective is to find a tribe, find a story and make a product that resonates, one that makes the story work.

That’s the whole thing. A story that resonates and a tribe that’s tight and small and eager.

I hope you can dream up something more productive than the end of the world, though.

But Enough About Me

Eden Through the Looking Glass

It’s not about you. It’s not about you. It’s not about you. Promotion is NOT the art of “Could you help me tell the world about me?” That’s not how it works. That’s the LEAST good way of trying to promote things. It’s the jerkiest and the most self-serving and it’s the one that rankles people who receive your request to help them take over the world.

Okay, so this problem is a bit more of something I deal with than something you deal with, because a LOT of people like to ask me to tell the world about them. Daily. Multiple times. I just looked in my various places and someone in my DM wants me to promote a video where he talks about himself to someone else. I looked in Facebook and someone wants me to help with a new project by sharing how awesome he is. I have five different emails that are requesting my time so that I can help someone promote themselves.

Promotion is a powerful part of marketing and sales. But “let’s talk about me and my awesome stuff all the time” promotion sucks. It’s not a very good relationship building tool. It’s not a very effective approach. It doesn’t really endear the promoters nor does it usually wow the people being pitched.

Promoting just causes is awesome. Promoting products and services and ideas because we think they’re awesome is awesome. Drawing attention from time to time to something you’ve created that’s clever and/or appeals to one’s audience is reasonable and useful.

Asking everyone you know to talk about how awesome you are? Just not as useful.

You know who’s awesome? You are. But don’t ask me to tell other people that I said so.

Want An Honest Opinion? Ask Opinionaided

The Spark of Genius Series highlights a unique feature of startups and is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here.

Name: Opinionaided

Quick Pitch: Opinionaided polls a crowd to answer your questions.

Genius Idea: Making Q&A real time, social, opinion-based and addictive.

At some point after Quora launched in 2009, the Q&A concept moved from the realm of stodgy forums to burgeoning tech trend.

Approaches to dominating the advice space include Facebook’s latest feature for polling your friends, location-based Q&A apps like Ditto and Localmind, anonymous Q&A app Formspring, and niche advice platforms for categories like fashion.

iPhone app Opinionaided’s approach is visual, opinion-based and social. But its killer quality is that it’s also highly addictive.

Users post photos, attach a yes-or-no question, decide whether to make it public, and tag it with a category. While they’re waiting for responses, users can vote on other questions with a thumbs down or thumbs up (think Hot or Not). They also have the option to add a comment or share the question with friends, and they can respond to anyone who comments.

The most valuable characteristic of the app is its ready and assembled army of responders. Within two minutes, I had about 20 responses to both of the test questions I asked. CEO Dan Kurani says he believes the average number of responses to be between 30 and 100. Some of the people who commented on my question had answered more than 21,000 inquiries — even though so far the only incentive to do so outside of killing time is a gold star given to top advisers.

An engaged userbase is quite an accomplishment for a startup that launched its current product less than a year ago. But once again, we arrive at the (literal) million-dollar question: “Can Opinionaided make money?”

Kurani, who raised a $1.2 million round earlier this year, says he hasn’t nailed that part of the business down yet, despite exploring options involving professionals who want to use Opinionaided to showcase their expertise. So we posed the question to Opinionaided’s users.

Only 10 people took me up on my question this time. But they weren’t optimistic: Almost three quarters of respondents said no, Opinionaided would not be a money maker.

Google Halts Newspaper Scanning Project

Google has shut down its Google News Archives digitization program, which aimed to make the world’s newspaper archives accessible and searchable online.

The archives of several hundred newspapers will continue to be available at news.google.com/archivesearch, but Google is “no longer accepting new microfilm or digital files for processing,” a Google spokesperson confirmed to Search Engine Land.

According to the Boston Phoenix, Google emailed its contributing partners Thursday to notify them that the initiative was coming to a close so that the company could redirect resources to “newer projects that help the industry, such as Google One Pass, a platform that enables publishers to sell content and subscriptions directly from their own sites.”

Although Google will no longer process any more papers, publishers can continue to add material to their individual archives via sitemaps. They are also welcome to pursue alternative partnerships to get the content Google has scanned for them online elsewhere.

Mapping Social Media Uses

some social media potential uses

When we talk about how we’re going to use social media to build relationships and sell and things like that, do we ever come out and map what we really mean? In the simplest form, the graphic above represents one iteration of that. Maybe I want to help Josh sell more shirts at Secret Superhero Gear. I can tell people about the stuff. I can ask them to tell their friends –but wait! There’s the first opportunity to think more about this!

If I replace ‘ask them to tell their friends’ with ‘install Facebook LIKE button next to the shirts,’ then I’ve just used social media tools to advance a marketing goal. Let’s carry on. If I want to listen for people who might need a shirt that Josh is selling, I’m sure to be a bit intrusive, but maybe if I listen to people asking about gifts to give, etc, I could politely butt in now and again on Twitter.

If I spend some time on Twitter, on Facebook, on Blogs, on forums where they might care about Josh’s products, then I can look at a more integrated approach to selling.

That last one: “Make someone a hero with it.” I think that’s the gold standard of marketing, isn’t it? My Camaro isn’t just a car. It’s my own personal therapist. It’s my batmobile. I feel like a hero when I get in that car. It makes me a hero. Does your product make your customer the hero? If no, then rethink this.

This is Just One Simple Map

If I’ve done it right, then I’ve opened your head just a little and now you’ve got some creative ideas brimming with how else you can map the various social media uses. For instance, if you need a lot more inbound links, then you’ll have to make a delectable prize for people to consider linking to, and that prize will have to be remarkable and hero-making for the people you hope will create those links. See how that map would go very much differently than what I gave you up top?

So, what will your maps look like?
